In making his animated video for N.A.S.A.’s A Volta, director Logan delved deep into the paranoid and violent universe of the Date Farmers (see three posts below), creating a music video that might be seriously lacking in music, but is nevertheless memorable for its radically blocky visual style, steeped as it is in video game culture and the iconography of Tony Montana, et al.

In an interview on Boing Boing, the makers thus described the Date Farmers’ “narco-cholo” atmosphere :

Their world is devoid of perspective, decidedly two-dimensional. Their visual vocabulary is a mix of pop culture references and cholo folklore, a violent combination of corporate iconography, found objects and jail tattoos. The smelly back alley of our collective subconscious soaked in pop culture detritus.
